Inlays, onlays and endocrowns
Inlays, onlays and endocrowns are restorations made outside the mouth and fitted to a prepared tooth. They are not interchangeable names: the area they cover and the situations in which they are considered differ.

How they differ
An inlay repairs a contained area within the biting surface. An onlay also covers one or more cusps where protection is needed. An endocrown may be considered for selected root-treated teeth, using the remaining tooth and internal chamber for support. Suitability is assessed tooth by tooth.
Choosing a restoration
The thickness of the remaining walls, the location of damage, the bite, gum margins and bonding conditions all matter. A direct filling or full crown may also be an option. A large existing filling does not automatically mean an endocrown is appropriate.
Preparation and follow-up
Following preparation and impressions, the restoration is made, checked for fit and bite, and placed using an appropriate method. Follow any instructions for the temporary stage. Report a high bite, persistent sensitivity or movement after fitting.
Aftercare & Recovery Information
Follow practical guidelines for eating, cleaning and symptom management after treatment.
