Dental implants
Dental implant treatment replaces a missing tooth with a support placed in the jaw and a restoration fitted to that support. Planning considers how the new tooth will function, how it fits your mouth and how you will care for it.

Is an implant suitable for me?
Suitability depends on more than the number of missing teeth. Your dentist assesses gum health, available bone, your bite, medical history, medicines and daily cleaning. Examination and appropriate imaging help identify important structures around the proposed site. Gum treatment or other preparation may be needed first.
How is treatment planned?
The surgical and restorative stages are planned together. After placement, healing is reviewed before the final restoration is made and fitted. Impressions, trial fittings and bite adjustments may form part of the process. The number of implants and appointments varies between patients.
Why do timescales vary?
Bone condition, additional procedures and healing all affect timing. A temporary tooth may be possible in some circumstances, but a permanent tooth on the day of surgery cannot be promised in advance. Bridges and removable dentures should also be discussed when they are reasonable alternatives.
Looking after an implant
The surrounding gums and bone need ongoing care. Although an implant cannot develop tooth decay, inflammation can affect the tissues supporting it. Smoking and inadequate cleaning may compromise healing and longer-term health. Contact your dentist if an implant or its restoration feels loose, painful or repeatedly bleeds during cleaning.
