Toothache: When Should You See a Dentist?
Toothache can have several causes, including decay, a damaged tooth or inflammation around a tooth. The way the pain behaves helps a dentist assess it, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. Pain relief may make you more comfortable while you arrange care; it does not repair the underlying problem.

While you arrange an appointment
Avoid repeatedly testing the painful tooth with very hot, cold or hard food. Keep your mouth clean gently and follow a pharmacist's or clinician's advice about medicines suitable for you. Do not place aspirin or another chemical directly on a tooth or gum, and do not use leftover antibiotics without a prescription.
When the situation is urgent
Seek prompt dental advice for worsening pain, swelling or fever. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, or a serious facial injury requires emergency assessment. In Türkiye, call 112 for an emergency rather than waiting for an online appointment.
What to tell the clinic
Explain when the pain began, where you feel it and whether biting or temperature changes trigger it. Mention recent treatment, medication and allergies. A period without pain does not necessarily mean the problem has resolved.
