Sensitivity After a Filling: When Should It Be Checked?
A recently filled tooth may feel different or sensitive, but the pattern and direction of symptoms matter. Brief sensitivity to cold is not the same as pain that starts by itself or keeps getting worse. There is no single waiting period that is safe for every patient.

Notice what triggers the discomfort
Tell the dentist whether the sensation follows cold, heat or biting. If the tooth seems to touch before your other teeth, the bite may need checking. Avoid repeatedly testing the tooth with hard food, and never try to file down a filling yourself.
Protect the tooth
Take care while local anaesthesia is wearing off. Continue cleaning as advised. A temporary filling is one stage of treatment, so keep the appointment for the planned next step even if the tooth feels better.
Arrange a review when needed
Increasing pain, symptoms that wake you at night, swelling or a marked biting problem needs assessment. Sensitivity does not automatically mean root canal treatment is necessary, but repeatedly suppressing pain does not resolve its cause either.
