When Do Wisdom Teeth Need Removal?
A wisdom tooth does not automatically need to be removed simply because it is present. Its position, cleaning access, symptoms and relationship with nearby structures help determine the plan.
Which symptoms need assessment?
Recurrent pain at the back of the mouth, swollen gums, an unpleasant taste, trapped food or difficulty opening the mouth should be checked. A partly erupted tooth can develop problems, but similar symptoms may come from another tooth. Pain location alone is not enough for a decision.
Does an impacted tooth always cause trouble?
Some can be monitored. Others may be associated with decay, inflammation or problems affecting a neighbouring tooth. Appropriate imaging helps assess nearby structures. If removal is proposed, discuss both the expected benefit and the procedure's risks.
Preparing for an appointment
Note when the problem began and whether it has happened before. Share your medicines and medical history. Do not cut, squeeze or probe the gum yourself. Taking antibiotics without advice does not remove the need to assess the cause.
When should you not wait?
Fever, substantial swelling or increasing difficulty opening your mouth needs prompt assessment.
