What Causes Persistent Bad Breath?
Bad breath can follow certain foods or habits, but persistent symptoms deserve a closer look. Deposits on the teeth or tongue, gum problems and dry mouth are possible contributors. Masking the smell does not establish the cause.

Start with a consistent routine
Clean your teeth and the spaces between them, and clean your tongue gently. Removable dentures need their own cleaning routine. Mouthwash is not a replacement for these steps. If your mouth often feels dry, mention it to the dentist along with any medicines you take.
When it continues
Book an assessment if the problem persists despite care, particularly with bleeding gums, pain, swelling or an unpleasant taste. The dentist can check for oral causes and suggest another medical assessment if needed.
What helps the discussion
Note when the problem began and whether it changes during the day. Explain your cleaning habits, tobacco use and any products you have tried. Bad breath is a health concern that can be discussed openly without embarrassment.
