What Should You Do After a Tooth Extraction?
After a tooth is removed, the socket begins healing under a blood clot. The aim of care over the first few days is to protect this clot, minimise irritation and recognise symptoms that need professional attention.

The first 24 hours
Rest and avoid disturbing the socket with your tongue, fingers or strenuous activity. Do not rinse vigorously, spit forcefully or use a straw, as these actions can dislodge the clot. Take care with hot food and drinks while numb.
Eating and cleaning
Choose soft foods and chew on the other side. Keep the rest of your mouth clean, taking care near the extraction site. If advised, begin gentle warm saline rinses only after the first 24 hours. Tobacco and alcohol can delay healing.
When to contact the clinic
Some tenderness and mild swelling are normal. Contact the clinic if bleeding does not settle after firm pressure with gauze, pain increases sharply after a few days, or you develop fever or difficulty swallowing.
