Teeth Grinding: Signs to Notice and What a Night Guard Can Do
Jaw fatigue on waking, worn teeth or repeatedly pressing your teeth together during the day may warrant an assessment for clenching or grinding. Not every headache or jaw pain is caused by grinding.

What should you notice?
Record whether symptoms are worse in the morning or during the day, whether chewing affects them and whether teeth feel sensitive or have chipped. A partner may notice grinding sounds during sleep. Medicines, sleep difficulties and snoring can also be relevant.
Does a night guard solve the whole problem?
A suitable guard may help protect teeth from damaging forces. It does not necessarily address every underlying cause of grinding. Muscle symptoms, sleep and daily habits may also need attention. An off-the-shelf appliance will not fit every mouth appropriately.
Daytime habits
Notice whether you are clenching without realising it. Hard foods or prolonged gum chewing may aggravate an already painful jaw. Discuss sleep or stress concerns with an appropriate healthcare professional. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
When to seek a review
Arrange assessment for broken teeth, a changed bite, persistent pain or difficulty opening the mouth. If a guard causes new pain or no longer fits, ask for advice rather than cutting or reshaping it yourself. The aim is to understand and manage the problem, not simply to obtain an appliance.
