When Should a Mouth Ulcer Be Checked?
A sore inside the mouth may follow a cheek bite or irritation from a denture edge. However, not every sore should automatically be called an ordinary ulcer. Duration, recurrence and changes in appearance matter.

How long has it been there?
Note when it started and whether it returns in the same place. Many simple ulcers improve within a week or two. A sore lasting more than three weeks should be assessed by a dentist or doctor. Seek advice earlier if it grows, bleeds, becomes more painful or looks unusual.
Avoid further irritation.
Very hot, sharp, acidic or spicy foods may make it uncomfortable. Continue gentle cleaning. Do not put alcohol, aspirin or caustic substances on the sore. If a denture or wire is rubbing, arrange an adjustment rather than cutting it yourself.
What will be discussed?
Share the duration, medicines, similar symptoms elsewhere and recent dental work. Further investigation or referral may be needed. Resemblance to a photograph online cannot establish a diagnosis.
Why does duration matter?
Checking a persistent sore helps identify its cause. This does not mean that every ulcer represents serious disease; it means that timely assessment matters. Difficulty breathing or swallowing needs urgent help rather than waiting for a routine dental appointment.
