Can Tooth Decay Be Found Before It Hurts?
Tooth decay may cause no pain at first. A colour change, food trapping or new sensitivity can deserve assessment, although not every stain is decay.

How is it checked?
The dentist examines tooth surfaces, spaces between teeth and the edges of existing fillings. Imaging may help assess areas that are not directly visible. Looking in a mirror or waiting for pain is not a substitute for a full examination.
Does every area need a filling?
Early mineral loss is different from a cavity where tooth structure has broken down. Preventive care and changes to daily habits may be appropriate for some early lesions. A cavity may require a filling or other restoration, while a problem extending into the pulp can need more extensive treatment.
Can a cavity be repaired at home?
Toothpaste or herbal mixtures cannot rebuild an established hole into sound tooth structure. Scraping the tooth, placing glue in the cavity or abandoning a review when pain stops will not resolve the cause. Cleaning, frequent sugary snacks and drinks, and personal risk factors should be discussed.
Why not wait for pain?
Identifying a problem earlier can make different, sometimes more limited options possible. That does not mean every early finding needs an immediate procedure; appropriate monitoring may also be part of care. Ask about your decay risk and which changes would be most useful for you.
