Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?
Root canal treatment addresses inflamed or infected tissue inside a tooth. Local anaesthesia is usually used to help manage discomfort. People and teeth respond differently, so a promise of no sensation or pain at all would be misleading. Tell the dentist about previous experiences and any concerns before treatment starts.

During the appointment
Agree on a signal if you need a pause or feel discomfort. Cleaning and filling the canals may take one or more appointments, depending on the tooth and the findings. The number of visits is not a reliable measure of treatment quality by itself.
Afterwards
Tenderness is common for a few days while the surrounding tissues settle. A temporary filling is often placed first; avoid chewing hard food on that tooth until the final filling or crown is completed. Severe swelling, worsening pain or an uneven bite should be reported.
Protecting the tooth
A treated tooth often needs a permanent restoration to protect it against fracture and further leakage. Relief from pain does not mean treatment is complete without that final step.
