Can You Have Dental Treatment During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is not automatically a reason to postpone necessary dental assessment. Pain, swelling and suspected infection should be evaluated, with treatment and medicines chosen around your individual health needs.

Can You Have Dental Treatment During Pregnancy?

What should you tell your dentist?

Share that you are pregnant or may be pregnant, how far along you are, and your medicines and supplements. Mention a high-risk pregnancy or other health conditions. Your dentist and maternity clinician can coordinate care when necessary.

Why might gums bleed more easily?

Pregnancy-related changes can affect the gums' response to plaque. Rather than stopping cleaning, ask about suitable care and have persistent bleeding assessed. It should not automatically be attributed to pregnancy alone.

Treatment, anaesthesia and imaging

Necessary dental care can be provided during pregnancy using appropriate methods. The need for imaging and the choice of anaesthesia are assessed individually. It is incorrect to assume that all dental treatment or all dental X-rays are prohibited. Equally, unnecessary procedures should be avoided and personal risks considered.

Daily care

If nausea or tenderness makes cleaning difficult, tell your dentist so suitable tools and habits can be discussed. Do not choose antibiotics or pain medicine without appropriate advice. Worsening pain or swelling should not be left until after the birth without assessment.
