When Should a Child First Visit the Dentist?
A child's first dental visit should not wait until pain develops. A visit when the first tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday, provides an opportunity to discuss development, feeding and cleaning.

What the appointment covers
The dentist checks the mouth and asks about daily care and feeding. Toothpaste, brushing support and decay risk can be discussed. Preventive measures are considered according to the child; every first appointment does not require the same procedure.
Preparing your child
Use short, calm explanations about meeting the dentist and having the teeth checked. Avoid presenting a visit as punishment or promising that the child will feel absolutely nothing. Tell the team about previous experiences, fears or additional needs.
Care at home
Start cleaning when teeth appear and ask about age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste and adult supervision. Baby teeth matter for comfort and function even though they will eventually be replaced.
