Caring for Fixed Braces

This guide provides general aftercare information. Follow the individual instructions from the dentist who treated you. Contact the clinic about new or worsening symptoms.

Newly fitted or adjusted braces can cause pressure on the teeth or irritation of soft tissues at first. Pay attention to the pattern of symptoms rather than assuming that severe or increasing pain is normal.

Cleaning around appliances

Clean the teeth and around the brackets regularly. Ask which interdental brush and other tools suit your appliance. Deposits in difficult-to-clean areas can contribute to decay and gum problems. Limit frequent sugary food and drinks.

Food habits & protection

Cut firm food into manageable pieces and avoid items likely to break brackets or catch in the appliance. Orthodontic wax may help an irritating spot if recommended. Do not force a displaced wire or broken component back into position yourself.

Reviews & retention care

Contact the clinic about a loose bracket, an uncomfortable wire or damage. Follow the review and elastic-wear plan you were given. Care continues after active treatment through the prescribed retention plan; do not independently stop wearing a retainer because your teeth look straight.

For difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, or a serious injury, do not wait for an appointment reply. Call 112 for emergency help in Türkiye.
