After a Tooth Extraction or Oral Surgery

This guide provides general aftercare information. Follow the individual instructions from the dentist who treated you. Contact the clinic about new or worsening symptoms.

The clot in an extraction socket is part of healing. Avoid disturbing the area, forceful rinsing and spitting on the first day. Use the gauze as instructed. If bleeding continues, follow the pressure instructions you were given rather than repeatedly opening the area to inspect it.

Initial care & comfort

While numb, avoid biting your tongue or cheek and take care with hot food and drinks. Choose soft food that is comfortable to chew. Avoid strenuous activity on the day of surgery. Follow advice about tobacco and alcohol; smoking can delay healing.

Hygiene & cleaning routine

Ask how to continue cleaning without disturbing the site. After many extractions, careful cleaning and any recommended gentle rinsing begin after the first 24 hours, but specific surgical instructions may differ. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicines on your own.

When to contact a dentist

Contact a dentist about bleeding that does not settle, pain that worsens after initially improving, fever or increasing swelling. Do not wait for a routine review when symptoms are severe. Confirm any appointment needed for stitches or a healing check.

For difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, or a serious injury, do not wait for an appointment reply. Call 112 for emergency help in Türkiye.
